To learn new skills quickly requires a lot of efforts. If you know the right methods at the beginning, you can save a lot of time to do it.

Learning new skills will take you 10,000 hours!

This is what I used to believe when I heard about 10,000 hours rule for the first time in high school. So whenever I’m going to learn a new skill at this time, I always wonder that will I want to spend 10,000 hours learning this skill or not?

Then, I used to ignore learning a lot of valuable skills at that time because of this limited belief that I will not have enough time to learn them.

After 6 years to learn and experiencing a lot of new things in life, finally, I recognized that it doesn’t take that much 10,000 hours for someone to learn a skill.

I get the misunderstanding about the meaning of 10,000 hours rule for learning new skill — And I need to admit it.

The real meaning of 10,000 hours of learning new skills should be understood at the expert level. It means that you will understand very deeply about this area or that skill after 10,000 hours of working on it. But for learning a new skill that you can apply in life, basically, it just takes around 2 weeks.

Yes! Just only two weeks to focus on it, and spend at least one to two hours each day to learn about it, so you can use it and apply this skill in your life. It will not be at the expert’s level but it will be good enough for the standard level or even intermediate level.

And there are only two things that you really need to do to achieve your goal of learning a new skill in 2 weeks. These are:

1. To learn new skills quickly, let: Learning as a child

Let remember about the time when you are a kid; how do you feel, and what do you do when you learn something new?

Kid feels very curious about the new things they learn. They learn by trying and failing, like the way kids learn the skill of riding a bicycle.

They take the small bicycle with 4 wheels to keep the balance at first.

Then they use 2 wheels bicycles to practice and fall so many times before they can control how to ride the bike.

And they don’t care about how many times they fail, or how many supported wheels they need to use before they can ride a bike properly. They are ready to do anything to learn the riding skill.

It will be the same way we want to approach a new skill. Let always feel exciting to try and fail with it, because this is an important step to help you learn something new. Nobody can be successful for the first time they do something.

The more failure you have, the closer to master the skill you are.

But the most important here is your attitude. Always keep it positive and full of energy when you learn the skill. Because if you don’t enjoy what you learn, you can’t learn and grow it to the level that you want or even will stop it just before you can control the skill.

In addition, as a kid, when we learn something new, we always feel curious to learn about all the aspects of things that we want to know. As when I still remember the first time I learn to drive my bicycle, I spent hours observing other older’s friends ride the bike; I asked them to teach me how to keep balance, how to bump the wheels if no air, how to fix the chain if it doesn’t work, etc.

Anything related to the bicycle or I believe that can help me to ride better, I all want to learn about.

This is how you can learn a new skill in 2 weeks

It also applies the same way when you want to learn a new skill, let be curious about anything related to this skill and think as you don’t know anything about it before.

This is how you can learn new skills quickly!

Because when we grow up, we usually approach the new skill we want to learn by our conscious mind with the knowledge we used to hear or know about it.

But if you want to boost the maximum ability to adapt to a new skill in 2 weeks, I need you to forget everything you know about that skill before.

Let imagine you as a white paper that doesn’t know anything about this topic. Then, start to approach the skill as the first time you learn how to ride a bicycle when you are a kid.

Let yourself feel free to learn anything you can relate to this skill without any pre-assessment. By doing this way, your mind can learn the best things about this skill and help you to form this skill in just two weeks’ time.

2. To learn new skills quickly, let: Learn then teach again

Learning then teaching again

Before I just think that learning more means I can remember more. So I spend time reading as much as I can about the skill I want to learn.

I don’t say that reading more is not good, but if you just read and don’t apply what you learn, it doesn’t make sense. Because our brain always has two sources: input and output.

If you just have one of them, you will not complete the process of learning a new skill effectively. You need both sources. And “input” here means the knowledge you get in your mind about the skill while “output” means the things you do to develop your skill in real life.

And the best way to do with your “output” is by teaching your skill to others. I used to worry that I need to learn to be master the skill before I can really teach someone about it.

But this is not true. The idea here is you want to grow your skill and a lot of people out there want to learn this new skill like you but they still have no idea how to do this. Therefore, even if you just start for the first day, you already get more knowledge about this skill than the person who starts to learn this skill at day zero.

These kinds of people in your target audience, can be your friends, your siblings, family members, or anyone else who you want to share with.

For me, this is my family.

It means that whenever I learned a new skill in the daytime, I always spend time in the evening when I stay with my family to share with them what I learned.

It helps me to remind the lessons I learned about this skill twice — one in the morning by myself when I learn and take note about it; and the second time is when I share with my family.

And when I share what I learned, I use my own language to share with others.

This is a very important step when you use the things you learned and turn them into your own version. By doing this, your brain will establish a part of the brain to record and remember the way you approach the skill.

It helps you to remember better about the topic you share and become more interested in learning this new skill when the skill now is understood and used by your way.

These are 2 steps that I did to learn the new skills for the last couple of years. By doing this way, it helps me to develop many valuable skills that are related to my career and improve my life quality, such as: learn how to write blogs, learning to make videos, digital marketing, dancing, magic tricks,…

And I believe that these 2 steps will be a great foundation for you as well when you want to learn new skills quickly that you have never tried before. Don’t feel worried or doubt about yourself when starting something new.

Just use a fresh mindset without any concern and be curious like a kid to learn. Then applying what you learn to teach others again to help them know new skills while you can enhance your understanding of this skill.

A fresh mind to learn and a passion to share are the best steps for you to learn a new valuable skill.

To learn about the growth mindset, nowadays, you can approach from so many points of view. However, in this article, you will experience a totally new way of how to grow a mindset in an effective way.

This call “Freedom in a Box”.

What does it mean to FREEDOM in your growth mindset? Let give yourself 10s to define it, to see what comes up in your mind first before you read this story.

Because I want you to feel how different your definition of freedom is to the other thoughts. To let you really feel that, freedom is actually something that is very clear for each person. But it is also very vague when we come up to find out the common definition that can use for all cases, for everyone.

As Alber Camus, a very famous French author, journalist and philosopher used to define that

“Freedom is nothing but a chance to be better.”

It means that we have the freedom when we can actually have a chance to grow ourselves to be a better version by the way we want to grow.

While you can find in the Cambridge Dictionary the definition of “freedom” is

“The condition or right of being able or allowed to do, say, think, etc. whatever you want to, without being controlled or limited”.

This definition is more general and is more well-known by many people about the meaning of freedom. But let think, if we use this concept to describe the society we are living in in 2021, does it really make sense?

When the COVID-19 become the global pandemic. Millions of people are positive with the virus, a hundred thousand people die,… Countries closed the border for months, schools closed, millions of people lost their jobs and were stuck at home.

Does it still mean freedom in the global concept?

The answer is NO.

Because even you are a healthy person who has a lot of money and wants to travel, you still can’t do it because all the countries are lockdown and restrict immigration. And you actually can’t get a growth mindset in this situation (when you really feel stuck in life).

These thoughts come to me when I was stuck in Melbourne, the most liveable city in the world for nearly 8 months, between 4 walls, no real face-to-face connection with friends, families because of COVID 19.

And at the beginning of this pandemic, when I was stuck in my room, I usually ask myself:

“Does I have freedom?”;

“Do I enjoy life in the place where people give it the name “the most liveable city on the planet” and for 8 months I didn’t have any real connections with people who I loved — face to face?”

These are the tough questions for me to answer for weeks.

When you have time, energy, money, and desire to meet and greet with people but the social situation doesn’t allow you to do it. It means that your freedom can’t define by the way how the Cambridge Dictionary defines it.

And after nearly 8 months of lockdown in the pandemic, I learn 2 very valuable lessons about freedom that I believe can be used as a new way to define the meaning of freedom, or at least it is right for me in this situation. In a short phrase, I want to call it is “Freedom in the box”.

“Your true freedom comes from your mind, not from where you stay or what you can do.”

This is the first lesson I recognize about the relationship between growth mindset and freedom in the last half-year.

Real freedom must come from the way how you think about yourself and your surrounding environment. Because when your mind does not feel freedom, you can’t really have freedom. And when you don’t have real freedom, it is impossible for you to growth mindset for the long term.

Your thoughts decide your life, what you believe will become what you see.

When I stay in my room for 8 months, finally, I can fully understand it. Let me think if you are also in my case, or maybe worse where your country can be lockdown more serious than this city, Melbourne.

You can go around your house, do exercise, decide what time to eat, wake up, and go jogging for a while just in your neighborhood because of the restriction that doesn’t allow you to move far more than 5km from your house.

So in somehow, if we just have a quick consideration, we feel like we still have the freedom, not like the people who are in jail and just can see the sun for one or two hours a day, we still can go out for walking, doing exercise and take fresh air whenever we want.

But the limitation here is we can’t meet the people who we love (if they live far more than 5 km from our house), or travel back to visit parents if you are an international student or holding a working visa in another country. And these things are belongings to mental life — a very important part to define the freedom in each person.

Because the word “freedom” comes from our mind, we can’t touch it, can’t see it. Just can feel and think about it. Therefore, if your mind can’t feel the freedom feelings by itself, even you can own all the material things in the world, you still see yourself as don’t have freedom.

When I self-recognize this lesson, I tell myself every single day that “I have freedom”, even I still can’t back to my country to visit my family, and stuck between 4 walls for nearly 8 months.

I learn to make myself feel happy and enjoy the day every single day during the pandemic time. Because I understand that if I don’t make my mind feel happy, by the feeling of freedom. I will fill my mind with a lot of toxic thoughts about what’s going on right now.

Actually, I faced this issue months ago, when I lived in the first month of the pandemic. And this feeling ruins all my productivity and energy to work on my goals when all the time I just feel I lost my freedom when being stuck in my bedroom.

It looks like I live in the box without the exit door and don’t know what to do with my life when I be stuck between 4 walls.

But when I practice to teach myself to feel the freedom from my thoughts, I know that the lockdown time is the time when I can free to do whatever I want, to grow my habits that I wished I have time to do for years.

And instead of feeling stuck between the brick walls, I feel I have more free time to do the creative world, to spend time for myself to improve and learn to be a better version that is ready for bigger challenges when the pandemic finishes.

Freedom comes from your mindset, not from what you have or where you can go.

Freedom in a growth mindset must be understood as “Free to do what you want + safe for everyone”.

This is so true for this year, 2021. When we are living in the middle of the century’s pandemic.

Freedom now doesn’t mean you have your own right to do whatever you want, such as not wearing the mask in public because you can’t breathe. Or because you need to have extra income so you keep going to work when you know you have COVID 19.

These are the reality that happens in this city — Melbourne. And properly in many places in the world, we can see the same situation is happening from the daily news.

When you pay for your freedom by the risk or danger to the community, actually, it doesn’t mean you are having the freedom. It just shows that you are a selfish person who just cares about yourself.

And many people in this city are using the definition of “freedom” to do things like that “not wear the masks; keep going out and approach the community when being positive with COVID 19”.

These actions make the number of cases of coronavirus in Melbourne always from 400–700 new cases per day and make the most liveable city is become “the most coronavirus cases” in Australia.

And one of the main reasons is because there are so many people who want evidence for their freedom, but they chose the wrong time and wrong way to do it.

“Freedom in the box” — if we just think in general, we will never feel that we can have real freedom when we are inside of “the box”.

And it is not the way a growth mindset works.

But when you put it into the specific scenery, especially in this year 2020, you will see that this is suitable and necessary for us to learn how to feel freedom when we must live in “the box” of lockdown; or being self-isolation between 4 walls for months because of the pandemic.

We have no choice to ask the pandemic to stop immediately from today. But we can choose to tell ourselves that we have the freedom under any difficult circumstance.

Let feel the freedom from your mind and make sure that your freedom does charge anyone under the life risk. This is the way how we can define freedom.

Living the student life may be one of the most beautiful times for most of us.

This is the time that you don’t need to think too much about how to make a living, paying the bills, and a lot of named or un-named problems in life as when you graduate from University.

Therefore, let enjoy your student life and turn it into the best foundation for your future by choosing to do the right things that create beautiful memories for you as well as make you be grown in a positive way.

And the following list is 18 things that I did and love to recommend for you to do in your life, especially during years in the University that will help you to have the best memories and experiences in your early 20s.

1. Having your own goals

Doesn’t matter how big or small your goal is, but you need to own at least one for yourself. And this goal must start from your mind or your heart, not being impacted by outside factors.

For example, you have a goal to earn enough money to pay for your whole family vacation next summer, this is a great goal that you own by yourself.

But if you say that your goal is to complete all the tasks teachers give you a week before the deadline, it is not what I mention. Because it doesn’t something that you really want to do and can decide to do it or not. This is just a compulsory part of your Uni life, study, and submit the essay.

Your goals like your compass to show you the direction to go and focus on in your early 20s and make it be more meaningful for you.

2. Have your first love

If you already have a girl/boyfriend in your high school, you can ignore this one and move to the next one. But if you haven’t yet, your Uni life is the best time for you to start your first relationship.

It helps you to understand about another half of the world, create special feelings that you have never experienced before. Some of them are great, some that make you never want to mention again.

But life is the experience, and having a relationship is a kind of important experience that we all need to have, especially at the age of early 20s.

And one tip for you when having a relationship during this time is

Let quit ASAP if you feel stressed with it or your relationship ruins you with parties, spending money more, while don’t bring any positive values for you.

And choosing a good partner in your relationship will be the priority factor to decide if your relationship is healthy or not.

So, let carefully when choosing your partner.

3. Challenge you to stand on the stage and talk in front of many people

Have you ever stood on the stage and performed in front of many people before? Some of you did, but many never did it before.

I can totally understand this feeling when we are in high school, the people who can stand on the stage must be talented artists who can sing, dance or study very well that can stand there to make their own speech.

However, when you go to university, you don’t need to be outstanding to be standing on the stage.

What you really need is your brave.

Because at the University, we have dozen of activities per week, not just a few activities like in high school. And even in the class, you have group presentations when you need to present in front of a hundred of your classmate about the topics.

And by doing this, you are improving your confidence and public speaking skills. The factors that will play a vital role in your successful future in society.

4. Learn a new language and be fluently

This will help you to open many new doors for your career when you can speak an extra language.

For example, in my country, Vietnam, if you can speak English fluently, you can easily find a job in an international company with a salary starting at thousand dollars compared to just two to three hundred dollars per month if you start in a local company.

But you need to make sure that you really fluently at the language, not just the certificate or good score on it. Because in the business, people need the real conversations, not just good grammar and listening skill.

5. Having a part-time job to understand how hard money you make

If you were born in a middle-class family, you don’t really need to work to pay for studying fees in your University — This is a “luxury” that many people wish they can have, but they don’t.

But doesn’t matter you were born into a rich family or just a normal one, starting to earn your first dollars when you study in University should be on your “MUST TO-DO” list.

Because when you really start to earn money in your own way, from handy jobs as cleaning, delivering food to the jobs as a private tutor, PG(Promotion Girls)/PB (Promotion Boys),…you all learn valuable lessons for your life.

This kind of job for someone will even help them to pay for living fees, student loans, but just think about the life experiences and lessons you learn when you work, it already has own values that help you to grow and be a better person with more life experience than others.

6. Join in social activities and social clubs.

First of all, it will help you to have a lot of wonderful experiences in your student life when you get involved with others from social activities.

Later on, it also helps to build more social connections that will benefit your future.

If you have interested in sport, let join the sports club. If you feel interested in photography, let join the photography club,… Don’t limit yourself and think that you are not good enough to be a club member.

You just need to enjoy it, let join in and create great moments with your club mates with social activities.

7. Have trips with your friends.

Having a group of best friends in University and having trips together will create great memories for you when you think back about your student life.

At that time, you are young, energetic, and love to discover. You don’t need to worry too much about life and have a lot of time for yourself rather than for company projects, family issues, etc.

So, let plan with your best mates to create great trips together.

8. Leave out of your comfortable zone

Don’t limit yourself as you did in high school.

When you study at University, you are already over 18 and enough age to take responsibility for your life. And at that time, you have nothing to lose.

Any mistake you make will be known as a valuable lesson to grow you up. So let go out of your comfort zone and start to challenge yourself.

9. Living in the dorm

This is what I normally call “The Univesity Paradise” where you will live with your friends and can do a lot of crazy things together.

For many of us, when studying at the University means that we will move to another city to study. And living in the dorm is the best opportunity for us to grow when you will live with many other people.

Learning how to adjust yourself to live in a group is very challenging but it will help you to grow up rapidly.

10. Learn how to manage your money

You need to learn this lesson very carefully if you don’t want to have fun for the first two weeks of the month then eat noodles for the rest of the two weeks.

But this is a reality that happens with many students when they don’t know how to control their money, and feel happy to spend most of their money when they just receive it from parents for parties, shopping, eating outside,…

If you don’t want to face the same issue, you need to have your own money plan to know how much you can spend and what categories are you going to spend on.

It will help you to save a lot and don’t need to eat noodles all the time at the end of each month.

11. Don’t waste your time with parties, you don’t have that much free time, you just lack plans to do.

In your university life, you can easily receive a lot of party invitations all day long.

And when you feel like you have a lot of free time, because the lecturers at University don’t ask you that much homework as your high school teachers did, you will feel like you have more motivation to join in most of the party.

But let think carefully about it. Your time at the university is not that much freedom, it is just because you lack your working plan.

University life is the time when you self-learning and grow, nobody will control you strictly because you are already old enough to decide your life.

But these years are the most important years to build your strong or weak foundation for your success. It all depends on how you use your time.

12. Give 30 minutes at least per day for your family time

If you can live with your family, this is great.

But most of the students when going to University will move to another city to study. It means that they don’t have that much time with their family like before.

Therefore, spending at least 30 minutes per day to call back to your family is very important when it helps to maintain a good relationship between members of the family, update your day with parents, and not feel alone in the new city.

13. Be grateful for what you are having, doesn’t matter what

If you have good things happen in your life, that’s great. But if you have bad things happen and make you have a headache to solve the problems, let think it is your valuable lesson in life.

Being grateful for what you are having is the best way to help you always keep a positive mind and have more beautiful moments in the Uni years instead of just feeling boring and hating the things that happen to you.

14. Always remember your most important task is studying

Many of my friends when starting their university life, they just focus on earning money. Because they want to evidence for their parents that they are mature and old enough to do anything they want.

That’s great if you can earn money when studying at your university. However, always remember that your main purpose is studying, money is just an extra factor that makes your student’s life to be more interesting.

Because I saw many of my friends who focused on making money more than studying that leads to their failures in tests and need to study again twice for just one subject. Several of them when counting how much it costs for learning credits again, it is even more than the money they earned from their part-time jobs.

15. Figure out what you want to do when you graduate — having your own dream (not your parent’s dream)

Many parents want their children to choose the major, the University that they wished they can study before but they didn’t. This is a harsh reality that you can easily see in Asian countries and even in Western countries.

And if you choose the University and the major depends on your parent’s wishes without enjoying to learn. It will be very hard for you to be outstanding in what you are doing because it is not your dream, this is your parent’s dream.

When over 18, you are mature enough to decide what you really want and let listen to your heart and dream. Let show your parents your dream, and if you have enough brave and clear ideas for your dream, your parents can’t stop you and will slowly support you to do it.

16. Travel overseas to discover the world

To make the most of student life, traveling is the essential part. Let traveling overseas at least one time in your student life. This trip can be with your parents or your friends, whoever you love to go with.

Let go to discover the world, to see the difference between cultures, the beauty of new lands. This experience will help to enhance your knowledge, diversity, and understanding of the world rather than just watch through TV or the Internet.

Go and self-experience how beautiful and harsh the life is going on in different parts of the world.

17. Keep your body healthy with exercise and eating habits

When you are in high school, if you eat too many unhealthy foods, your parents will control you and ask you to eat more fruits, vegetables,…But when you are in University, anything you choose to eat will depend on you.

And if you just choose unhealthy foods like fast food, noodles, soft drink,…as they are cheap and convenient. You are ruining your health.

I saw many of my friends faced with stomach issues because of eating too frequently unhealthy foods and skipping meals. It leads to many health issues later on and the money they need to pay for the hospital could be more than the amount of money they need to have good and healthy meals during University life.

So, let being smart with your choice. Eating healthy to keep a healthy body rather than regret to waste money on medicines later on.

18. Believe in yourself

This is the last but also the most important habit that you need to self-practice every single day in your life, not just in the Uni time.

But the time at University is a very special period of time when you just start your own life and don’t have your family to stay with you.

You will live in a strange city, meet strange people, need to take care of yourself, and don’t have that much life experience before.

And “Believe in yourself” is a must-have habit that will help you to get over all the struggles in life. Because it will help you to support the belief that

After the tough time will be a good time, and if you never give up, you can achieve anything you want in life.

Final thoughts about how to make the most of student life.

The list can be longer, as I plan to write down 27 things list. But I choose to short it to focus on just 18 things that I believe are the most important for anyone to have the most of student life.

And the number 18 is also the age when most of us will start a new life at the university with a lot of excitement and many worries when the first time lives far away from our parents as well.

But when you finish this period of time and look back, you will see this time as one of the great times in your life, when you just grow enough to start to discover your world, and have a lot of passions, energy, and beliefs that no one can stop you.

When you choose the right habits and things to do, this time even becomes more grateful for yourself. And this list of “18 things on how to make the most of student life” will be a good guideline for you to start this journey.

Wish you have a great Uni life.

Highly persistent people normally be known as successful people. Because the people who can persistent with their goal help them to achieve whatever they want in life.

This is the belief I always keep in mind for years when I learned this lesson from many famous and super successful entrepreneurs such as Jack Ma, Jeff Bezos, Gary Vee, Grant Cardone,…

They are my idols not only because of their success but also their working ethics. These people all believe that success will come when we have a great goal which makes us feel inspired to achieve every morning when we wake up and keep consistency to work on it until we can get it.

And I believe that in everyone, we all have our personal goals, the things that we really want to achieve in our lives in each specific period of time.

Someone can have big goals such as building electric cars, flying to the moon or building up the billion dollars unicorn company such as Elon Musk while someone’s goal just simply to have a happy family with a nice house, beautiful car, and a vacation per year.

We are all different in the way we set goals and choose what we want to pursue in life. But there is one thing we all in the common is

We all need to work hard and consistent with our goals if we want to make it come true.

If we don’t pay attention to the goals and put in the hard work to do it for weeks, months, or even years. We will never get it. But when we commit to ourselves that we will consistent on the goal, it’s doesn’t matter how long it will take for us, but finally, we will get it.

As Confucius used to say

“It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop.”

But how to build up the persistent character to help us keep working harder and longer to achieve the goal is something we can learn together as common habits that anyone can develop.

No.1 habit of Highly Persistent People: Practice writing journal daily

This is the habit that personally, I did for years. And this is also the question that I heard from many of my friends when I share with them the way how I can keep focusing on achieving my long-term goal.

“Why practice writing journal daily can help to build the character of persistence?”.

This is because when you start to journal your day, you will see yourself in a clearer picture, plan out what you need to do in a day to achieve your ambitious goal later; and can write down how your feel during the time you chase your dream.

It helps in tracking your process better and fills up your mind with energy and positive thoughts when you read and write what you plan to do and what you did to achieve your ambitious goals.

No.2 habit of Highly Persistent People: “5s Habit” to remove the negative thoughts

“5s Habit” is what I name it. This habit means that I give myself free to come up with any new thoughts, both good and bad. Then I will give them a chance to survive for 5s. After that, I delete all the negative thoughts out of my mind and start to work on my tasks instead of keep thinking.

Let make a simple example that I normally need to use this “5s habit” in the morning. This is when I set the alarm to wake up at 5 a.m and feel so lazy, sleepy to wake up.

Just want to stay on the bed, turn off the alarm, and sleep for couple more minutes. This is the “bad thought” that normally happens in my mind. Especially during the winter in Melbourne, when the temperature is just around 1–7 degrees.

To be honest, I don’t want to leave my warm bed at 5 a.m.

But I need to because it is a part of my daily schedule that I write in the journal. And this is a bonus point why I always try to make the journal every single day. Because it helps me to plan my day ahead. And gives me the motivation every single morning to wake up early and start doing exercise or working on my projects.

As I know that the feeling of sleeping more feel minutes will be comfortable, but the feeling of missing the tasks of the day is very upset.

And the idea of 5s means I still can enjoy a little bit of time sleeping more. While 5s doesn’t mean too much time but it still can make my mind feel comfortable by getting a little bit more sleep. But in another part of my mind, it wakes me up after 5s because it wants me to have enough time to achieve the tasks in a day.

For you, you can start to apply this method “5s habit” to make your decision and reduce the lazy thoughts that appear in your mind.

The key point to success when you apply this habit is to follow your daily schedule.

Anytime you feel confused or lazy to do something, let look back to your daily schedule, give you 5s to hesitate before working on your established timeline.

By doing this, you can control your time better and keep the focus on the tasks that helps you to achieve your long-term goals.

No.3 habit of Highly Persistent People: The habit of “never give up”

If you decide to work on something, even just a small task, let make sure to complete it and on time.

Do you still remember “the tortoise and the hare story”? Do you remember the reason why the tortoise that walks very slow can win the tortoise, one of the fastest animals in this forest?

It is all from the attitude “never give up” of the tortoise. On your journey to achieve your goal, you are lucky that you don’t need to compete with “a hare” to decide who wins, who lost.

What you really need to do is just focus on the goal, keep working on it, and never give up as the way how the tortoise did in your childhood’s story.

And as the tortoise walks the very small steps, every time, to complete the competition. You also just need to practice the habit of “never give up” and work on all your daily tasks, from the smallest to the biggest, to really achieve your goal.

No.4 habit of Highly Persistent People: The sharing habits

The persistence character is not only build-up from your physical work but it also comes from your inner feelings. And when you decide to work on a goal that you know can take years for you to achieve, many times you will want to give up if you don’t have anyone to share with you the feelings you are having.

This is also the same feeling that happens to me when I set the big goals for life that require me to have a great persistent character and put a lot of hard work into it.

If you just keep all the feelings inside you, it will make you feel overwhelmed and exhausted soon if your project is a long-term game.

But when you have someone who you can trust to share your feelings, your purposes, and your goals. This person gives you more motivation to work on your goals because you know that now, there is someone else who is also known and looking for seeing you complete this goal.

Learn to share, but choose the right people to share with!

When you just keep all the thoughts in your mind without sharing them with anyone else, you can easily forget about the goals and quit it because you think that if you do or not, nobody knows or care.

And for me, I practice my “sharing habit” with my mother, with who I normally share all the big goals that I plan to do. She doesn’t judge me on what I dream or set as a goal, what she does is just listen to and motivate me. And for me, she is the best listener I ever have met, who plays a very important role in my life.

So let find someone who you can trust, such as your siblings, parents to share with them your goals as a method to help you have more motivation to “run on the marathon game” to achieve your goal.

This is what I did for the last 9 months, a new good habit that I build up for myself.

It means that you will create a map to track your whole process to achieve your goal. It will help to show you what you did or any big events related to this goal that happened to you. So you can self-evaluate how many percent of the process did you complete and how long you need to keep going.

Let make it becomes easier for you to imagine this example. Let think you have a goal to reduce 5kgs in the next 4 months.

It means you have roughly 120 days to reduce your 5kgs of fat. So you can make a map of 120 days steps (each day means one step) and use the highlight pen to highlight when every day passes and write down what is the biggest achievement you did on this day to help you go closer to your goal.

By doing this, it helps you to track your journey better and know what you should add, remove, or adjust to create a better result for your weight goal.

Final thoughts

These 5 habits are the ways to help you boost your mood, improve your ability, and keep your focus on the real goals while reducing the distraction. Therefore, these habits can be well-known as the vital roles in helping you to build up a persistent character.

And like many other good characters that you want to develop in life, the persistent character also takes time to grow. And by applying the appropriate methods and right habits, you can own this character faster than you can expect.

So, let start to add more good habits to practice in your to-do list from today to make the persistent character soon be your own.

How to become an entrepreneur? This is you need the spirit of BETA to be a real entrepreneur.

A beta fish under the water, an entrepreneur who starts his own journey to build his business.

Two look like can’t be related to but actually are very connected.

When you look at an entrepreneur, you can see an image of a person who desires to turn his idea into a real business, to create something that brings value to the market.

A person who is very goal-oriented but normally goes alone on his own journey to achieve the goal.

And the more success he/she has, the more loneliness he/she can be.

While a beta, a combatant under the water, is also a kind of fish that is very competitive. If it finds out its goal — the rival, it will never stop to chase to attack until being the winner.

And it is also a kind of fish which is famous for living alone on its life journey (except when it needs to make birth for a new generation).

For me, as a person who starts my own entrepreneur journey for a year (not too long but also not too short), and having a passion for this kind of fish — beta. I recognized that between beta and an entrepreneur actually have a lot of common points that we can’t imagine.

And there are many lessons from the beta that an entrepreneur likes me (and you) can learn from it to achieve more success on our entrepreneurship journey.

1. The spirit of never quitting until you achieve your final goal.

If you have seen a battle of beta, you will see that the beta will never quit even if it has serious injuries (until the owner stops the battle to save its life).

This is the spirit of a real combatant and what a real entrepreneur needs to have.

Because being an entrepreneur means that you will start everything from zero. You take a new opportunity to work on but also have a lot of risks are waiting for you.

And if you easily quit because of the problems that happen to you during this journey, you hard to become a real successful entrepreneur.

For someone, their entrepreneur journey can be easier than yours, maybe they just need a few months to a year to establish and make the profits from their investment.

But for many entrepreneurs, the journey to make an idea to be profitable can take several years to start earning the first dollar.

And the spirit of “Never quit until wins” of beta is what you must have if you are having a big dream with your idea.

And in reality, there are more than 90% of startups failed in their first 5 years which one of the common reasons is the entrepreneur doesn’t have enough passion to follow his/her dream.

This absolutely can happen with you if you are an entrepreneur (or on the way to being) who has a great idea that made you feel excited for days. But when you think about a longer journey (can be years), you start to feel vague, nervous and have an unsure feeling.

And you must spend time for yourself to think if you can adopt that spirit of beta or not. If you believe you can, let keep going on your entrepreneur journey. But if you think you can’t, let be a staff who works from 9–5 instead of trying to be an entrepreneur.

Except in the case that you don’t have yet but you really passionate to learn about this spirit — the spirit of “Never quit until wins” from beta. You can start to learn and practice it first then start your entrepreneur journey.

Until you can own this spirit, you can feel confident to walk on your entrepreneurial journey. If not, keep working on it until you get it. Then, let startup.

2. Stick with your goal, but be ready to adapt to rapid changes in your environment.

I have a few betas at home and normally let them practice fighting around every two or three weeks. In the last couple of weeks, when I let my betas fight together, I also try an experiment with them to see how good “my combatants” perform. The idea of this experiment is I will let two of them fight together in a small bottle for around 5 minutes. Then I put both of them immediately in a bigger pot (5 times bigger than that bottle) to observe how they will fight in a bigger environment.

The result doesn’t make me disappointed.

My combatants just get less than 1 minute to familiar with the bigger pot before starting fighting again for up to the next 10 minutes (actually I need to stop them because betas already have injuries. And if I don’t stop them, they will fight until die).

It’s just a fun experiment to see how good my betas are without the idea to use for my story on medium.

And yesterday, when I thought about the entrepreneurship topic that I’m going to write about, the image of betas and the battle appear immediately in my mind.

This ability of beta in adapting to a new environment while keeping its focus on the battle makes me immediately connect with a very important character of the entrepreneur:

“Stick with the goal but can adapt rapidly with the change of the environment”.

Because when you are an entrepreneur, you start everything from zero while don’t know which way will be the best way to go or what can happen on the market for a small startup like you.

So if you don’t have the ability to adapt and change rapidly with the change of the environment, you are making your journey to be successful as an entrepreneur to be harder.

And in the study about the reasons why startups failed, two of the biggest reasons also related to the weak ability to adapt to the changes in the environment and business situation of entrepreneurs.

When you start up, your business is still very small and flexible to adjust.

Therefore, if you just try to keep a fixed way to approach the market and do your business in traditional ways, you will lose your advantage of flexibility as a startup.

However, there is one thing you always need to be fixed, this is your final goal for this business.

This is the soul of your company, the point that makes your company different and can create massive results later on.

Let remember about the beta, it always focuses on its rival and the battle even when it be rapidly changed to the bigger environment.

Final thought

There are many lessons from nature that we can apply to life and business.

The lessons from the beta fish are just a part of many lessons I learned from nature that help me to understand more about the life and the entrepreneur journey I’m going on.

You can just spend a few more minutes a day observing the environment surrounding you or even the life of your pet, you can find out many “Ah-ha” moments from nature for you to apply to the business and your life.

Like the lessons about entrepreneurship from beta fish, if I always try to make myself busy (a thing that most of the new entrepreneur tries to do) and don’t have just a few minutes to observe the betas, I will never find out the strong connection about them with the spirit of being an entrepreneur.

And if you ready to be an entrepreneur, let be ready to be a strong “beta” in this world.

Solving the financial problem is not easy, especially when you don’t understand the game of money.

Because money is a very special object. If you can’t make it work for you, it will make you work for it.

In your life, money is somehow can be known as your blood. If you have good blood, you have a happy life and a healthy body. While having bad blood will cause you a lot of trouble.

And you have good blood when you know how to use your money wisely and make it works for you, to create the results that you expect to have in your life.

Your blood will be bad when you don’t know how to treat with your dollars effectively which leads to many problems in life that are related to money.

No.1 typical financial problem: Live paycheck to paycheck

More than 78% of American workers live paycheck by paycheck in 2019.

This is an insane number that is hard for us to believe but it’s real from one of the biggest economies on the planet.

At present, there are more than 20 million people who are jobless in American right now, increasing up to more than 15 million during this pandemic time.

It also means that many people can’t pay for their bills, food, and be homeless when they don’t have any savings and live paycheck to paycheck in this country.

This is a sad story but also an alert for any of us about the risk when living paycheck to paycheck.

We all don’t know and can imagine that in 2020 the world can face a global pandemic and lead to close borders and millions of people being jobless for months.

But this is the way how life works.

Always full of unexpected things that can happen that we can’t control. But if you just live paycheck to paycheck, you even face more troubles in life when things happen.

Solution

The best way to stop living paycheck to paycheck and make a guarantee for your life when any bad things happen is by earning more money and having an emergency fund.

By doing these things, you can protect yourself from unexpected risks as pandemics and even can invest better for your future.

And while the experts told CNBC that we need to have an emergency fund with at least 3 to 6 months income for safety reasons. I recommend that you should have this fund for up to one year time.

So you will be totally safe if having anything unexpectedly happen in your life.

A clear example is the coronavirus pandemic.

Like in Melbourne, Australia, where I am living, the city is lockdown for nearly 6 months, and still don’t sure when it will finish.

If you lost your job during this time and don’t have enough savings, it is very tough to survive without support from the government (but the fund is not suitable for everyone yet).

And better than expected support from the government or others when you face a similarly hard time like the pandemic, you need to start to save for your emergency fund from today. This is the safest way for you to work on.

No.2 typical financial problem: Don’t know where the money goes at the end of each month

Just around 15 months ago, I face this issue all the time when I didn’t know where my money went every month.

Even I don’t buy and own luxury pieces of stuff, the amount of money I spend every month is still a huge number. Because I spend a lot of money on eating outside, buying snacks, small stuff that I think is cheap.

But when all of them combine together, it up to a few thousand dollars per month that I spent on.

Later on, I recognized the reason is that I never have a limitation for myself and don’t track when and what I spend money on. This problem is not only me have but also many of my friends are facing.

And if you also feel surprised whenever it comes to the end of the month when you see the total spending, and you don’t know where you can spend that much money, I totally can understand your feeling.

Solution

To stop this problem, you need to practice a new habit called “Tracking your money”.

It means that you will track all your money spending every day, and even give yourself a limitation on the amount of money that you can use in a month. By doing this, you will know how much money you can spend and how you use your money.

For me, now, I allow myself to spend up to $200 a week and have a notebook that I will write in all my spending. To save time, I normally just count all my spending one time a day in the evening and write in this notebook.

You can choose to use notebook or note apps (whatever you feel comfortable with), but keep in mind the idea of this method is tracking every dollar you spent. So you can know exactly where your money has gone every month.

No.3 typical financial problem: Want to be rich by exchanging hours for the money

This is not the way how you can make a fortune.

Because you only have 24 hours a day. And if you can work all 24 hours (an impossible theory) with your average salary per hour is $25/hrs (a really good salary in the developed countries, most countries will be lower).

It means that you can earn up to $600 per day. That’s good money if count per day. But if you do an extra calculation, it means you can earn around $18,000 dollars per month.

This is the maximum you can earn if you work all 24 hours a day with a good average salary at $25/hrs. But actually, nobody can work that many hours.

And normally, that $18,000 dollars will be 3 to 4 months salary if you work 9–5 jobs (not for a single month, except you are the CEO or leader of very big companies).

Solution

You get rich by having your own business or investment.

And the solution here is to let start your own business or have a side hustle income from today.

If you are good at writing, you can start your writing career on Medium to earn money as Tim Denning (he makes $11,000/month from his stories on Medium only from 2019, and now absolutely more than).

Or you can start your Youtube channel like Kevin in Meet Kevin channel, which talks about finance and educational content (what he learned or read on news) and earn around $200k per month.

And there are more than a dozen ways that you can earn money besides your 9–5 jobs from online and offline that I can figure out.

The key to being rich here is from having your own business and investment.

This is when you work for yourself and be paid by the clients, not from your boss who asks you to stick at the desk from 9–5 to send emails and prepare documents for him.

4. Lack of personal finance plan

Let be honest with yourself when answering this question.

Do you have a personal finance plan for yourself in the next 6 months, 12 months, 3 years, or even more?

This is a question that you need to be clarified as soon as possible. Because when you don’t have your own personal financial plan, you don’t know how much money you need to save, how much you can have, and what you can do with it in the future.

It looks like you are on the journey to find treasury, you know your golden cave locates in the forest, but you don’t have a map to show you which way to go in this forest.

Your financial plan is your map, and if you want to find your gold in a forest, you need to have your map firstly.

Solution

So how to create an effective personal financial plan?

This is a question that you can find a lot of answers to on google in just a second.

But for me, I create my personal financial plan based on answering the following questions

  • What is my current financial situation now?
  • How much money do I need to spend on average every month?
  • What is my biggest financial goal after (X) months?
  • How much money do I need to save until this time?
  • Can I find any extra sources of income to add in?

These are the 5 main questions I ask myself and try to write down the answer as much detail as I can. Based on doing this method, I already have my financial plan for 6 months, 1 year, 2 years.

And by reviewing my plan every week, I can track and adjust my activities and working plan to help me achieve my personal financial plan in my targeted time.

You can choose to use the same methods as I do, or you can try to apply the steps methods from WikiHow, or “The 1-Page Financial Plan” from Forbes magazine.

These are some of the other good options for you to create your personal financial plan effectively.

No.5 typical financial problem: Think that having more money means less real happiness.

The reason never comes from having too much money that leads you to less happiness. The real problem comes from the way how you use your money.

Just have a look in your city, the places where normally have high criminals rates come from the poor areas, not from the rich suburbs.

This is because when you don’t have money for food, education, health,… you have a higher tendency to be criminal (because you don’t have anything to lose) compare to when you have a happy family, good education, food on the table, and a healthy lifestyle.

But when you have a lot of money and you don’t know how to use it properly.

You spend on gambling, buying luxury stuff, and having parties,… (These things you can do just when you have money) but it is also the reason why you get into more trouble and feel unhappy with your life.

Because you are using your money to waste on the material things and doing the things that ruin your life as gambling, overnight parties.

And this is a reality that many families face, especially when the kids don’t understand the values of their parent’s money and use it uncontrollably.

Solution

If you want to be happier when you have more money, you need to learn how to use it wisely and don’t be controlled by the dollars.

A good education about personal finance will be a great foundation for you to do it. And whenever you are going to spend the money (doesn’t matter it is a small or big amount), let ask yourself this question

Will my life be better or having the positive results when I spend money on this thing?

If the answer is “YES”, let do it.

Because when you have a lot of money, you will have a lot of options to choose from.

If you choose the options that can bring positive impacts such as paying for a trip to travel the world, join in a life course, investing to make more assets,… your money is doing a good job to make your life be better.

But when you choose to spend on negative things like an expensive bottle of wine for overnight parties, gamblings,… your money is real your trouble.

Final thought

We all need money to have a better and happier life.

And actually, the money itself is no problem.

The real problem comes from the way how we choose to use it.

And if you have a wrong mindset about money when using it, obviously, the more money-related problems you will have. It makes the sentence

“The more money you have, the less happy you are”

become true.

But when you can use money in the right way with the right mindset

The more money you have, the happier you are.

This blog will share with you my own research about the supercar marketing strategy – Bentley.

They don’t build cars — they build status

Founded in 1919 and known as one of the oldest car manufacturing companies on the planet. Bentley cars are a symbol of luxury.

How did this old brand become a symbol of luxury?

This is the question that came to my mind last week when I browsed websites to check the price of luxury cars. As I just want to calculate how long I need to work to earn enough money to own one of them.

The cheapest one in Australia costs around $177,000 for the Bentley Bentayga. This is around $27,000 higher than the average salary of a CEO in Australia.

After a week of research about Bentley’s marketing strategy, I figured out four interesting and very important lessons about the way this brand markets itself as a luxury manufacturer.

Before we talk about the four marketing lessons we can learn from this brand, let’s have a quick look at the number of sales.

In 2019, this brand increased worldwide sales by 5% to 11,006 cars. This is also the seventh consecutive year that Bentley sold over 10,000 luxury cars.

Supercar marketing strategy
Source: Bentley announced sales by region/country during 2018–19

If we just assume that all customers will buy the cheapest Bentley at $177,000 (but actually, many people are ready to pay millions of dollars to have a custom Bentley car), the total sales value will be $1,770,000,000 (at least for 10,000 cars).

This is a number any luxury brand wants to achieve.

So what does Bentley actually do to create its great position in the luxury car market? And how has this brand kept growing for consequently seven years?

No.1 supercar marketing strategy: A Global Brand With an Optimized Concept for Each Market

This is the first thing I found out about the way this brand successfully markets itself globally.

You can recognize it when you check the official Bentley website. On the web, it has three language options for customers to choose from English, Chinese, and Russian.

For each language you choose, different web formats and types of cars will appear with the background. It helps to create a familiar feeling for the customer when seeing the image of a Bentley on the road in China, or parking at a yacht port in Russia.

With three languages, Bentley can satisfy the demands of their potential clients from the three biggest markets: countries where they speak English (mainly UK, America, Europe), China, and Russia.

Supercar marketing strategy bentley
Source: Bentley official website, the Chinese version

Normally, the toughest part for a brand to go global successfully is from understanding the culture and building its image to suit the demand of its potential clients in that specific market.

Bentley did this very well with different versions of products being optimized and introduced to different markets.

No.2 supercar marketing strategy: Bentley Has Been Closely Associated With the Hollywood Film Industry

Luxury cars are an integral part of Hollywood movies.

With the high demand for luxury, featuring images in movie scenes has the ability to reach hundreds of millions (even up to a billion) people worldwide.

Sponsoring Hollywood movies is an excellent marketing strategy that Bentley has been doing for years.

Bentleys appearing in The Fast and the Furious film series help bring the luxury brand to audiences. And make it become the desire of many people when seeing their favorite actors drive Bentley cars.

It also helps to emphasize a secret message to the audience that “if you want to look fancy and top-notch like the actor in the movie, you must have a Bentley in your garage.”

No.3 supercar marketing strategy: Bentley Has Built Up a Franchise Network Across the World

Bentley doesn’t sell directly, it sells through the franchise system.

So if you want to be a Bentley dealer in your country, you must belong to the Bentley Dealer Network.

By using this method, it makes the Bentley brand look harder to buy because you can’t buy it like a normal car in the store. You need to go through a dealer and normally you’ll book months ahead before receiving it.

It also helps the brand reduce problems and marketing fees when selling directly to customers. This is because the dealers who belong to Bentley’s franchise system will work directly with the customer. Therefore, they can directly solve all the problems related to the customer’s demand before sending the car request to the factory.

No.4 supercar marketing strategy: Using Social Media As Visual Channels

To promote the luxury of the brand that evokes the desire to own Bentley’s cars.

Bentley has a great strategy for digital marketing.

From a stunning website, which is very interactive and interesting for viewers, to active accounts on all big social media platforms like FacebookInstagramYouTube, and Twitter.

On Instagram alone, the brand has nearly nine million followers while on Facebook, Bentley has over two million.

Supercar marketing strategy bentley
Source: Bentley’s official Instagram

The brand uses optimized content to suit different platforms, and they update daily.

So when you go to Facebook on Thursday, you will see a different image or video about Bentley compared to the content they published on Instagram on the same day.

This strategy helps the brand get the attention of potential customers more often. When it updates daily as well as runs ad campaigns on these platforms.

And although most of their followers on social media are young people (Millennials and Gen Z) who may not be able to afford the luxury car yet. The frequency of the brand on social media lets them know Bentley is a symbol of success.

So when these groups get older and earn more money in several years, the first car they think about when deciding to buy a luxury car will be Bentley. This method is known in marketing as the AIDA model (Awareness, Interest, Desire, Action).

It means Bentley builds its strong image on social media for future clients. Then, it starts to build the interest and desire for Bentley models with videos, images, and visual content for these potential clients. After that, it leads these people to make a purchase later on.

Takeaway

These are four important lessons we can learn from Bentley’s marketing strategy.

1. A global brand with an optimized concept for each market.

2. Bentley has been closely associated with the Hollywood film industry.

3. Bentley has built up a franchise network across the world.

4. Using social media as visual channels to promote the luxury of the brand that evokes the desire to own the luxury car.

This is a great combination of traditional marketing and modern marketing strategies. When the supercar’s brand used the main theme of luxury to spread the message of wealth and desire all over the world.

And if you want to market your product or service to a higher level (globally). These are great marketing lessons that you can learn from one of the top luxury brands — Bentley.

The fear of public speaking is a very popular fear that affects most of the population. However, it doesn’t mean that we must live with this fear for our whole life. If you want to overcome it, you really can do it, if you know the right methods.

The chance to stand on the stage must be your pride, never let it be your fear again.

Standing on the stage to speak for many people is like standing inside the forest at midnight.

It feels interested but also full of fear inside.

The moment when you come on the stage, you can start feeling nausea, your mouth becomes dry, your hands are sweaty and the heart rate increased rapidly while you look down to the audience and see a lot of people are staying there, waiting to hear from you.

These are just a few symptoms of fearing public speaking that people normally face.

And if you also face the same feeling before, when you stand on stage, this is totally normal. Because there is around 75% of the global population also faces the same problem as you have, and me too.

So you are not alone in this journey.

I still remember just 5 years ago, whenever I stand on the stage, I always feel nervous and sweaty a lot (this is also the reason why I normally keep in my hand the tissues all the time).

Although it’s a great feeling when you can stand on the stage and make many people listen to what you talk, it’s also not a comfortable one when your hand is always full of sweaty and you have shortness of breath because of nervousness.

And this is the reason why I try to grow my skill in public speaking continuously in the last 5 years when I have more opportunities to stand on the stage to speak as MC, public speakers in my schools,…

After years to experience many methods to develop public speaking skills. I figured out that there are 4 very important lessons that I keep applying and introducing for many of my friends to speak on the stage effectively.

And believe that it will be very helpful for sharing with my readers on medium too.

The more you practice your speech, the more confidence you have.

All the success comes after hard work and good preparation. And nobody can just come to the stage for the first time and talk fluently.

This is a big lesson I learned from my mentor, who is a famous public speaker and MC at my University. A man who leads all the big events in my University and many events in the city — a very talented MC.

For him, he always practices self-talk at least 10 times for any events he will be MC or talk as a keynote speaker before the event happen. And the bigger events he has joined in, the more practice times he will do.

I recognize this because he is not only my mentor but also my roommate in the dorm. So the image he talks in front of the mirror or to the wall is so familiar to me.

He used to teach me that

You don’t need to have the best voice to stand on the stage, what you need is just more practice than others.

Like the way I self-talk with mirror and wall so many times before I make the real speech or MC, I can self-learning a lot about my tones, body language, and face gestures.

So it helps me to adjust my body and voice effectively to give the best speech as I can do.

If I don’t self-practice a lot like this, I will face a lot of minors and even big mistakes on the stages if this is the first time I talk about this topic.

Let always remember “No one is perfect, but the more practice, the closer to perfect you are”.

This is a great lesson from him that I have always kept in my mind for years. Even now, when I don’t live in the same dorm with him anymore, whenever I prepare for a speech or be an MC on the stage, his lesson always appears in my head.

2. Let focus on one person and talk to him/her when you are on the stage

Instead of looking into the crown and don’t have any focus that makes you feel more nervous and worry when you see under the audience seats are hundreds of people, let choose one specific audience to focus on.

And make your conversation on the stage with many audiences to be your face-to-face conversation with only one person.

This technique takes me nearly a year to recognize.

Before, when I stand on the stage to speak, I always look around and don’t focus on anyone.

So when I have time to watch back videos that recorded my speech, it looks like my eyes tried to look for someone instead of giving a great speech to my audience. And actually, it happens will all the “beginner” who just start to speak on the stage a couple of times.

The reason behind this technique is to make yourself to be more focused on one subject and turn your “big conversation” with many people to be a “single conversation” with only one person.

It helps a lot in changing your facial gestures, body language, and your voice.

Because now, your mind treats your speech as a normal conversation with your friends.

Pro tip:

If you talk on a big stage, let change your focus to one of your audience every few minutes to make sure you pay attention to all sides of guests.

Because if you just look at one audience on the left side, the people on the right side will think your story doesn’t really relate to them or you don’t really want to share with them.

So keep balance when looking at both sides is the golden key to keep the connection and make your conversation to be more personalized.

3. Overcome the fear of public speaking by: Let your body move with your tone

Use body language when you talk. Don’t use too much, but also not too little.

As standing on many stages to make speeches as well as having a chance to see many amateurs to professional people do public speaking. I recognize that body language is one of the most important parts of any speech.

And it can make the speech to be greater or can destroy the performance, all depends on the way how this person controls their body language.

The masters in public speaking, when talking, they use body language to follow their tones.

It means that if they speak fast and want to emphasize their words, their body language will be strong and direct. And if they want to make people feel calm and have emotional moments, they use the tone down more often and less body language while focusing on facial gestures.

This is flexibility in combination between the tones and body language to create the best effect for the speech.

While the amateur people normally overuse their body language during their speech and make the audiences feel confused and dizzy when the speaker moved hands and body a lot.

Or some amateurs use too little body language, while their tone always keeps average and the hands always put in the pocket when talking. It makes the audiences feel sleepy when listening to these amateur speakers.

4. The more time you stand on the stage, the better public speaking skill you will have

Let every chance to stay on the stage to be your opportunity to practice your public speaking skill.

All the success comes after hard work and being good in public speaking is also not an exception.

If you really want to be good on the stage, you need to practice this as the way you practice your muscles in Gym.

And as you only can have bigger muscles and a healthier body if you keep workout daily and maintain exercise as your habit. It is the same for public speaking, the more time you practice and stand on the stage, the more fluently you will be.

And don’t care too much about the size of your stage if it is just a small one in your home where you speak in front of several of your family members or a big stage where have hundreds of people.

What you really need to care about is knowing that you are having the priority to talk with others, and what you really want to do is make the best speech to your audiences.

This is how I think all the time when I have a chance to be MC or public speaker in the events I join in.

Sometimes, the event is so “tiny” — It is just a family reunion where I am the MC for my family with around 10 people. But I still keep in mind the reason why I stand on the stage rather than thinking about how big this stage is.

And if I have any chance to be MC or stand on the stage, I will take this as my opportunity to grow my public speaking skill.

This is also the reason that helps me to be noticed and choose to be MC in many big events in my schools and community where I stand in front of hundreds of people to speak.

You never know when your big opportunity will come, so just keep going to collect all the small opportunity firstly.

Take away for overcoming the fear of public speaking:

These are the 4 biggest lessons I learned during the last 5 years about the way how can make better public speeches and stop the afraid of public speaking that I have for many years ago.

1. Practice self-talk before making your real speech

2. Let focus on one person and talk to him/her when you are on the stage

3. Let your body move with your tone

4. The more time you stand on the stage, the better public speaking skill you will have

All of them will be fitted with you to help you achieve better public speaking skills or maybe just a few of them.

But I believe that even if you just can get one of them, it still can create a massive change in the way you approach public speaking and reduce your fear in this skill.

And as you stand in the forest in the night time, now I give you the torch and the way how you use it depends on you.

Let make your public speaking skill to be your proud, not your fear anymore.

These rules to deal with toxic thoughts and make you feel better about life are quite simple. However, it is very effective that I saw many of my friends do it and get good results.

Therefore, in the article today, I will share with you all of them. I hope that these valuable rules will help you to deal with toxic thoughts as I used to.

Toxic thoughts like black coffee.

It’s bitter, not good when using too much, but many of us are addicted to it without knowing that we are addicted.

60,000 thoughts — This is the average number of thoughts you have in your mind every single day.

And the scientist from the National Science Foundation in 2005 found out that 95% was exactly the same repetitive thoughts as the day before. Within 80% of your thoughts are negative while just have 20% are positive thoughts.

Do these numbers shock you?

For me, I never think that I can have that many thoughts, and most of them are negative like this until when I read this analysis around 2 years ago.

And let have a quick calculation, if you have around 60,000 thoughts a day and 85% are negative, it means that in a day, you have about 51,000 negative thoughts in your mind.

This is a massive number, and when you think about what happens in your life, I think that you already understand why there are so many struggles and issues that happen in your life before and right now, right?

Because when your mind always full of negative thoughts, the negative things happen as the obvious results.

And the best way to help you to reduce the number of negative things that can happen in your life is to find ways to reduce the number of negative thoughts that appear daily in your head.

Rule 1 to deal with toxic thoughts: 5s RULE

Let learn to control your mind with the 5s rule.

This is a great lesson I learned from Mel Robbins in her Tedtalk speech around 2 years ago about how to control my mind.

It means that you will allow your mind to keep any thoughts in 5s before you decide to make it or quit it.

The idea of this technique is we give our minds the freedom to come up with any thought, but we will control the way how the thoughts can impact our lives by giving them just 5s before choosing to conduct or not.

And I used it by giving all my positive thoughts 5s to appear in my mind before I start working on it (or I will write down it immediately if I’m in the middle of doing other things). So, later on, I can work on that thought.

While for the negative thoughts, I also give us 5s to appear before telling myself to quit it out of mind. And the tip that I normally do to switch my thoughts from negative to zero is by using my hand to hit my head 3 times slightly.

It likes a signal for my head that

“Hi mate! This is all 5s. Now stop thinking about that stupid thing”.

You don’t need to hit your head as I did (even just a slight one, if you don’t like it), just do anything you feel comfortable about and make it as a signal for your brain that it’s already finished 5s to think.

Then, now is the time for your brain to stop this negative thought.

Rule 2 to deal with toxic thoughts: Looking at the problems in life as potential opportunities.

The problem in your life is the foundation for the toxic thoughts to grow.

And if your life is always full of opportunities and great things happen to you, the negative thoughts will never have the opportunity to come up in your life.

But unfortunately, life is full of up and down.

You will have a lot of opportunities but also have a variety of problems. And we all can’t stop the problem that comes to us, as these come from outside factors.

However, both you and I can change the way how we see the problem by adopting the mindset that:

“Problems are the potential opportunities”.

And this is a big lesson I learned from my economics teacher when I studied at the University. When he taught us about the issues in economics, even this is negative or positive, he normally reminds us that

Any economics issue you are studying here can see in a negative or positive way. And nothing that just has one angle to approach, we always have multiple ways to approach it.

The real issue is “Which way you choose to approach”?

If you want to have a good result, you need to think in a positive way and make your actions based on your thoughts.

And if you think the issue from its dark side, and you work on it as negative one. Your expected result hardly to be positive.

The way you choose to approach will decide your outcome. Not the problem itself.

After years graduated, I am still thankful for his great lesson. It helps me to change a lot in the mindset when thinking about the problems in life.

For me now, any problem that appears in my life is always a potential opportunity for me to learn and grow.

And instead of spending time focusing on the negative side of this problem, I choose to keep calm and spend private time to think about the positive impacts that this problem can bring to me when I can solve it.

It helps a lot in stopping me from having toxic thoughts while figuring out the positive ways to approach the problem and solve it properly.

If you still feel struggle with how to make decisions in your life when you face problems, let check more on this detailed blog “What To Do When You Don’t Know “How to make decisions in your life”.

Final thought

The toxic thoughts like black coffee. We drink too much is not healthy but if we can have a little bit (under the control of ourselves), it helps our life to be more interesting (have up and down).

But the problem with many of us is we don’t know how to control the input of toxic thoughts and keep it growing daily in our head lot.

And I hope that these 2 rules that I did and presented for you in this story will be helpful for you as the way it helps me to control my toxic thoughts in recent years.

A cup of coffee means enjoy the bitter, but many cups of coffee mean to destroy your health.

And toxic thoughts under the control means healthy and interesting life while a lot of toxic thoughts mean you are burning your mind.

Thank you for checking this blog, I am also running a Youtube Channel to share a lot of insights and stories related to Business, Media & Marketing, Personal Finance & Self Development that you can

Check my Youtube here!

This is a blog in series Wiki Business that shares insights about the business topic, and today I love to share the story about how to build wealth from the richest man in my town to you.

Being a millionaire from zero is the same way as you play the snowball. You start with a tiny snowball then roll it more and more until it becomes a massive snowball that you never ever imagine before.

It makes you feel extremely happy and amazed about your ability to make the tiny snow turn into the big snowball when you are a kid.

And when you grow up, if you can turn your “zero starting point” into multi-million dollars and help to change the life of thousands of people, how do you think it will look like?

The person who is the main character in this story is Mr. D (I don’t show his full name as he wants to keep a secret about his identity), the richest man in my hometown for the last 10 years.

A person with the value of the assets is approx. US$ 50 million dollars right now (and nearly US $ 100 million dollars before the pandemic); the CEO of the company with more than 3000 staff; and in the list of top 60 richest men on the stock market in Vietnam.

It’s not about bragging, what I want to do is show you how wealthy he is before sharing with you your five valuable lessons he taught me about how to be wealthy and have a happy life.

Before we start to figure out how this mand build wealth, I want to share you something firstly:

If you don’t know a lot about the Vietnam market yet, the average monthly income per capita in Vietnam in 2019 is just around US$ 200 per month, and if a normal Vietnamese person wants to earn $US 1M, it will take this person around 416 years to achieve.

Therefore, having US$ 50 million in Vietnam somehow can be considered as you have billion dollars in America.

And I am lucky to know him for many years even before he is known as the richest man in my hometown because his family is my family’s friend.

Therefore, I have many chances to meet him in real life and learn a lot of valuable lessons from him, especially about the way how he develops himself to achieve this level of success.

In the following parts, I will share with you about five biggest lessons that I learned from him during the last 10 years, from the time he just has around US$ 100 thousand dollars in the bank account until now, when he owns more than US$ 50 million dollars.

No. 1 to build wealth: 30 minutes rule — Always come early than others

This is the lesson I learned from him when I have a chance to join in an international event with him and his family.

In this event, he is the main sponsor who sponsored nearly US$ 70,000 for just a half-day event back in 2015. This is a huge amount of money at that time, and now still.

On that day, I still remember that we come around 45 minutes early when no guest comes yet.

At that time, I was very curious when seeing he comes too early while he is the most important person in this event — I mean, if he comes later, it still be OK.

And because I used to join in many seminars and meetings before where I saw many V.I.P guests normally come up just on time or can be late for minutes. Everyone still needs to wait and no one complains if the V.I.P comes late.

So when I see Mr. D coming nearly one hour before the event start, I feel really curious and ask him the reason why he decides to come so early when still no guests come yet, and just a few set-up staff are working.

Then, he smiled and told me that

If I come late, it means I don’t respect the time of others. And as a businessman, the time is the money and the reputation for me.

And if I come early, like today, I still have more than a half-hour to prepare for my speaking and if anyone comes early and wants to talk with me, I still can give them a few minutes to talk. If I come late, I can’t.

And I also have a “30 minutes rule” that I will come at least 30 minutes before any important event. So it helps me to reduce the risk of getting a traffic jam or feel hurried up when come late.

Anthony (my name), if you want to be a successful businessman, you also need to learn this lesson. Never late and keep for yourself at least 30 minutes in advance.

From that moment, I recognize a very important lesson about doing business. It’s not just about which position you are standing in this society, but it is more about the way how you treat others and use your time wisely.

As the way Mr. D came early on that day, he had time to practice his speech twice before the event started while still having time to make a couple of conversations with other guests, and received several calls to solve the business problems remotely.

And this is a great lesson that any of us can learn from him, about how to arrange the timeline.

When you can set up your time to come early on the important events for a half-hour at least, it helps you have more time to prepare for your speech or make friends with others that maybe can lead to a new business opportunity for you(who knows).

Another important point is you will feel safe and not hurry, the feeling that you can’t have if you are late or on time and worried that many people are waiting for you.

No. 2 to build wealth: Being a good listener and always smile

I learned this lesson when Mr.D joined in an evening dinner with my family, I asked him this question

“Mr.D, what do you think the most important character that I should have to be a successful businessman?”.

He told me

If you want to be a successful businessman, the first and most important is you need have is

“Being a good listener and always smile”.

This is the shortest answer about how to build the wealth that I used to hear.

I thought that maybe he will give me a long form of the lesson about it, but didn’t. However, when he explained to me the reason why he says like that, I think he’s right and that’s more than enough for me to start with.

As he explained, being a good listener is a very important skill because when we listen to others, it means that we are learning more about that person, that project.

But when we spend too much time talking, it means that we give out the information, knowledge to others. And we don’t get anything new into our minds.

And in the business, the more you know about your partners and projects, the more ability for you have to win and make an impact.

Moreover, the idea of always smiling is because when you smile, people can feel you are an easy-to-connect person. So, they will want to spend more time with you and feel safe when doing that.

But when your face is serious, people will feel scared and nervous when talking with you and don’t want to share all their thoughts, their feelings with you.

If you work with the partners or your staff, and you can’t create a safe and comfortable feeling for them to share. You will fail to understand them and work with them effectively to create success.

Let check this blog if you want to know more about “3 important things that make you be a great listener”.

No. 3 to build wealth: Being a father in the family, not being a boss.

“Never being a boss in your family, let be a lovely daddy”

This is what Mr. D tells me when we talked about the balance between working and family life.

“A very important indicator to show how wealthy a person is”, he said.

Following him, a really successful and wealthy person is someone who has a happy life with a big bank account, if you lack one of them, you can’t be considered as a fully successful and wealthy person.

As he said, being a leader who has the authority to control more than 3000 people is an interesting job but not easy, and many times, you need to make the hard decision as a leader to adjust the small groups of people to consolidate the belief of the massive group.

“In the company, you can do it, and most of the time, it works.” — Mr. D said

But when you try to use the boss trait in your house, with your wife and your kids, it doesn’t make sense or even can make your family get into trouble if you use too much of authority power.

Because your kid will love, admire and collaborate with you to do the things you want them to do as you are their lovely daddy, not because you are a boss who can fire them if they do not follow your demands.

So if you want all the things in your small family to go well and be your strong foundation for you to achieve more goals in life, make sure to be a really good and lovely daddy, husband instead of being a boss in your own family.

No. 4 to build wealth: Think carefully before promising anything, and if you promise, you need to do it.

This is the character that any leader who wants to have outstanding success needs to have

Keeps your promise.

“And if you don’t make sure 100% that you can do it, don’t promise it.”

Mr.D taught me.

Because your promise presents for your personal character to others. And if you can’t keep your promise, you appear in others’ minds as an untrustful person who they can’t believe and trust.

“As a leader, a CEO who has authority with more than 3000 people directly and thousands family’s life indirectly. I need to commit to do all my promise if I talked, especially with my staff.

Sometimes, it’s very tough, but it is necessary to keep the promise that helps me to build trust with others” — Mr. D said.

For me and you, maybe we don’t have that big authority to thousands of people. But being a trustworthy person is a character that we can learn and need to practice to make it become ourselves.

Because the more success you have, the more trustworthy you need to be.

No. 5 to build wealth: Never stop learning, the more you learn, the more you can earn

This lesson is actually not from what Mr. D directly taught me. This is what I know from his wife, a great woman who behinds his success when she shared with me about the habit of Mr.D for years, this is self-learning.

On the 2nd floor in his house, he has owned a library with hundreds of books that he keeps reading for years every evening for at least an hour.

And when I come to visit his house, many times I visited his library, where not only books about business topics but also a lot of books from different topics such as politics, economics, cultures, history of countries that he owns.

The habit of learning every day and has owned a library in the house is the thing that I see in common of many successful people such as Gary Vee, Jim Kwik, Warren Buffet,…

The advantage of this habit is helping you to keep learning and growing your mindset, the main factor that will decide your success.

With just a few bucks, you already can have the mindset of successful people by buying and reading their books. It is so cheap compared to having a meal outside or treating your friends to coffee, but the value of it is outstanding for your success.

And this is a habit that if you can keep and grow daily, doesn’t matter how old you are, it will benefit you in your whole life game.

As Mr. D, now, he is around 60 years old and still keeps this reading habit every single day for years.

So there is no limitation for you when keeping this habit if you think you are too young or too old to start to build the habit of reading and learning every day.

Final thought

I know that this story is a very personal story when I share about a specific person that I know in my life. Normally, I don’t write in this way.

But the valuable lessons that Mr.D taught me about how to build wealth and I self-observed and learned from him give me more motivation to create this story to share with you.

Because I believe that these lessons can in some way help you like the way it helps me to grow myself and be a better version every single day on the journey to be a millionaire.

If you can dream, and put the hard work, then know the right lessons from the right people at the right time.

Any dream you have, as I do, will become true!
